Account 1 — A hiker walked round a bear closure that had been up since spring and found a spruce cut across a narrow ridge trail with a sixty-foot drop on one side. He had photographed that same tree standing at nine that morning. Twenty minutes later there was a second one behind him. At half five he heard a third come down ahead of him, on the only section he could walk out through. There was no sawdust at any of them, and no engine noise all day. Account 2 — A man camping on a gravel bar below a closed river section was awake in his tent with the lantern on when something took both his boots from eighteen inches away without a sound. He found them forty feet off at the water's edge, upright, side by side, laces tucked in, wet to the welt. Half an hour later an arm came through the two-inch gap at the bottom of his zipped door, to the elbow, feeling flat across the groundsheet — and it found the gap on the first attempt without searching for it. Account 3 — A hiker on an open bald with no cover for two miles found a cairn taken apart with its base stone left bare. The saddle route had a dead spruce laid across it, carried four hundred yards uphill onto open grass. And the handhold on the third route down had been cut at the root. Three exits, three alterations, inside about an hour — and he broke his wrist on the one that was left.
