Description

On the night of September 30, 2026, magma forced open a new crack about a mile beneath Halemaumau crater at the summit of Kilauea. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded 98 shallow earthquakes in 24 hours and 38.5 microradians of tilt in a single night, more than double what the volcano had gained in the five weeks since its last lava fountain. No lava has reached the surface from the new crack. The National Park Service has closed the Keanakakoi overlooks, and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says forecast windows for the next eruptive episode "can no longer be modeled." This video follows the week hour by hour: 165 lava overflows without a fountain, six new vents, the earthquake swarm, the intrusion, and the magnitude 3.5 that came a day after it was called complete. It explains why the direction of the crack matters, how little warning the same line gave in September 2023, what this eruption has already dropped on the homes downwind, and how the 2018 eruption began. IN THIS VIDEO • 165 overflows and no fountain • The eruption that could be forecast, until September 17 • September 30 to October 2, hour by hour • The east-west line and the one-hour warning of 2023 • What USGS has said, and what it has not • Tephra on Volcano village: January 24 and April 9, 2026 • How 2018 began: three days from a collapse to lava in Leilani Estates • Four earlier intrusions and how each one ended • The Holei Sea Arch (not volcanic) • Mauna Loa: normal SOURCES USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory daily updates and notices (Sept 28 to Oct 2, 2026) · USGS Volcano Watch, "An intrusion during an eruption at the summit of Kilauea" (Oct 2026) · USGS Volcano Watch, Ingrid Johanson, "The ups and downs of episode forecasting using tilt data" (Sept 17, 2026) · USGS pages on the 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2023 eruptions · National Park Service (Oct 1, 2026) · Big Island Video News · Hawaii Tribune-Herald (Feb 4, 2026) · Honolulu Civil Beat (Feb 10, 2026) · Big Island Now (Apr 9, 2026) · Hawaii News Now (Oct 1, 2026) · U.S. Census 2020 RELATED Kilauea eruption 2026 · Kilauea intrusion · Halemaumau · Kilauea episode 55 · Hawaiian Volcano Observatory · Hawaii Volcanoes National Park · Keanakakoi · Leilani Estates 2018 · Mauna Loa This is a developing situation. Figures are from the USGS update of October 2, 2026. The alert level for Kilauea is WATCH and the aviation color code is ORANGE, unchanged by the intrusion. The magma that moved on September 30 is still underground, and the observatory says conditions can change rapidly. #Kilauea #Hawaii #Volcano #USGS #BigIsland #HawaiiVolcanoes #Halemaumau #Eruption #CrisisRadar
