Description

Since April 17, 2026, the federal government has been draining Flaming Gorge Reservoir, on the Wyoming-Utah line, to keep Lake Powell above the level where Glen Canyon Dam can still make power. By October 2 the lake had fallen 15.77 feet and lost about 514,000 acre-feet. Lake Powell set an all-time record low anyway, on September 15. The order runs until April 2027, and the government's own forecast has the lake falling almost 14 more feet. This video follows the drawdown month by month: the record-low snowpack, the April order, the marina whose docks broke and whose drinking-water intake is now above the waterline, the fight between the upstream and downstream states over who repays the water, and the Bureau of Reclamation's dry-year forecast, in which Lake Powell still drops below minimum power pool in September 2027. IN THIS VIDEO • What six months of draining has done to the lake • Buckboard Marina: broken docks and a pump three feet above the water • Why Lake Powell hit a record low anyway • The order of April 17, 2026, day by day • The two lines at Lake Powell: 3,500 and 3,490 feet • The dry forecast: power releases at zero in October 2027 • Who puts the water back • The third emergency release in six years • Linwood, Utah, the town under the lake SOURCES Bureau of Reclamation daily reservoir data (Flaming Gorge, Lake Powell) · Bureau of Reclamation news release, April 17, 2026 · Bureau of Reclamation 24-Month Study, September 2026 (most probable and probable minimum) · WyoFile / Green River Star (June 4, 2026; October 4, 2022) · Cowboy State Daily (May 20 and September 14, 2026) · Deseret News / KSL (April 20, 2026) · Associated Press (August 2026) · Western Water Assessment (April 9, 2026) · Utah Humanities (Linwood) · Interior Department Record of Decision, August 21, 2026 RELATED Flaming Gorge water level · Flaming Gorge drawdown 2026 · Lake Powell record low · Glen Canyon Dam minimum power pool · Colorado River crisis · Green River Wyoming · Buckboard Marina · Drought Response Operations Agreement Figures are as of October 2, 2026.
