Description

John Kibera, also known as Doctor Shah, became one of Kenya’s most unusual criminals by turning grave robbery into a business worth millions of shillings. His targets were not banks, businesses, or ordinary motorists. He targeted the dead, stealing expensive coffins, valuable clothing, and belongings buried with the deceased. In this Dark Hour Docs documentary, we uncover the disturbing story of John Kibera, a Kenyan gangster who moved from armed robberies and carjackings to building a grave-robbing syndicate that preyed on wealthy families across Kenya. After operating alongside notorious criminals such as Wanogoh, Washosho, and Rasta, Kibera found himself searching for a less dangerous way to make money when his criminal associates began falling to police crackdowns. His solution was shocking. By studying newspaper obituaries, attending funeral planning meetings, and gaining the trust of grieving families, Kibera positioned himself close to expensive burials before returning under the cover of darkness to steal the coffins. With a team of accomplices and a connection to a coffin dealer in Parklands, he turned funerals into opportunities for profit and mourning into a criminal enterprise. The operation reportedly involved more than 1,000 graves and generated millions of shillings from stolen coffins, clothing, and valuables. But as the gang's activities continued, suspicion grew, accomplices were killed, and one terrifying encounter with the police brought Kibera's criminal career to a dramatic end. How did John Kibera become known as Doctor Shah? How did he deceive grieving families, and what happened when he hid inside a stolen coffin to escape a police operation? His story would eventually take another unexpected turn, from grave robber to a man who claimed to have found a new life through Christianity. Watch this Kenyan true crime documentary to discover the chilling rise and fall of John Kibera, the man who made millions robbing the dead.
