Description

Every time elderflowers bloom, I'm reminded of Nonna Maria. I met Nonna Maria during the last stop of my journey through Italy, in a small Sicilian village known for its unusually high number of centenarians. At 94 years old, she still prepares many of the traditional family recipes she grew up with and generously shared some of them with me. This crispy elderflower fritter recipe is one of them. Light, fragrant, incredibly crispy, and surprisingly simple to make. While this may not be a classic longevity recipe, it is exactly the kind of seasonal treat that still finds its way onto Nonna Maria's table every elderflower season. This traditional Sicilian elderflower recipe is completely vegan, easy to prepare, freezer-friendly, and perfect for meal prep. The fritters are wonderfully crispy on the outside, delicate on the inside, and packed with the unique aroma of fresh elderflowers. The recipe stays very close to Nonna Maria's original version, with only one small adjustment: I use coconut oil instead of lard. These elderflower fritters freeze beautifully, making them perfect for meal prep. Harvest your elderflowers once and enjoy a little taste of spring all year round.
