Description
My grandmother never bought a single thing with a fancy label, and at 52 I went back to buying generic her way. Here's how.
When I sat down with three months of grocery receipts, I was spending almost $900 a month on food and household stuff for just two people, and more than $150 of that every month was going to logos. So I went back to Grandma's way of buying generic. In this video I walk you through the 7 things I always buy generic now, from flour and spices to canned tomatoes, aspirin and plain bleach, and the 3 things I never buy cheap. One of those three, my coffee, saves me almost $1,000 a year just by buying the better kind. The very last one isn't really about money at all. It's something Grandma taught me without ever saying a word, and it changed how I shop for everything else. If you're trying to stretch a fixed income and want to buy generic like Grandma did without wasting money on the wrong things, stay with me until the end.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 — Grandma's plain flour sacks and my receipts
3:13 — #9: The $7 spice jar trick
4:32 — #8: Same cans, same plants, different label
5:54 — #7: Flip the medicine box over
7:32 — #6: Grandma's three-bottle cleaning closet
10:15 — #4: Store milk from the same dairy
12:58 — #2: Why I buy the better coffee
14:20 — #1: The skillet that fed three generations
Which of these will you try first? Are you switching to store-brand milk, or finally buying that good skillet? And what's one thing you'll never buy generic? Tell me in the comments.
