How a Monster Truck works

Monster trucks are heavily modified pickup-style vehicles built for exhibition motorsport, most famously involving car-crushing, jumps, wheelies, donuts, and freestyle arena performances. They typically feature oversized tires about 1.7 m (66 in) tall, long-travel suspension, high-powered engines, four-wheel steering, and reinforced tubular chassis designed to absorb repeated impacts. The sport emerged in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when lifted trucks began appearing at truck pulls and motorsport shows. Early vehicles such as Bigfoot helped popularize the format, first by driving over cars as a promotional stunt and later through organized competitions. By the 1990s, monster truck events had evolved into a distinct entertainment category, with racing brackets and judged freestyle runs. Modern monster truck competitions are usually held in stadiums or arenas on dirt tracks filled with ramps, crushed cars, buses, and other obstacles. Although the vehicles retain the appearance of pickup trucks, they are purpose-built racing machines.
