Description

On the morning of June 23rd, 1990, a 27-year-old woman in northwestern New Jersey failed to show up for work. Her brother let himself into her house and found the bed stripped bare, the phone lines cut, and a folded washcloth sitting on the headboard. She was gone. Her remains turned up four months later, 30 miles away. The cloth carried DNA from two people, mixed too tightly for any lab in 1990 to separate. It sat in evidence for 36 years. The man who left it there had already been convicted of lying about what happened to his wife in South Carolina, and his DNA had been in the national database for 12 of those years, waiting for a method that could finally read the cloth.
