Description
When Jennifer Lopez was announced as the host of the 2015 American Music Awards, industry expectations leaned toward the traditional host routine of scripted jokes and safe teleprompter segments. Lopez used the opening minutes to completely subvert the role. Beginning with an orchestral, slowed-down arrangement of her 1999 signature track Waiting for Tonight, she deliberately led the audience to anticipate a routine nostalgia set before cutting her own applause short. What followed was a physically demanding seven-minute nonstop routine traversing the biggest songs of that calendar year. It shifted how network producers viewed the role of an award show host, moving the format toward high-concept performance spectacle.
