Description

When Leon Russell released A Song for You on his self-titled 1970 solo album, contemporary rock press and listeners widely assumed the lyrics were addressed to singer Rita Coolidge, with whom Russell had worked during the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen era. Coolidge openly embraced the association over the years and referred to it in interviews and her memoir. However, during a 2015 performance in New York, Russell addressed the legend directly from the piano, clarifying that while he was flattered by the widespread assumption, the ballad was never composed about her and was intended as a broad pop standard. Source: Russell's direct comments refuting the muse rumor were recorded during his 2015 New York concert appearances; Coolidge's accounts appear in her autobiography Delta Lady: A Memoir.
