Are We Getting Old… or Just Giving Up? At 58, I never expected fear to creep into something I once loved. After a few unsettling experiences with horses, I gradually began keeping my distance—not because I stopped caring, but because the possibility of getting hurt feels different as we get older. This week, Diane encouraged me to take one small step back toward the horses. No riding and no dramatic comeback—just grooming Stormy, cleaning his hooves, leading him through the woods, and trying to rebuild confidence in both him and myself. Of course, things didn’t go exactly as planned. Gracie spooked while I was standing beside her, Stormy decided to walk away when I released the lead rope, and I had to choose whether to retreat again or keep trying. The victory at the end may look small—but to me, it wasn’t. Maybe getting older isn’t what stops us. Maybe it happens when fear convinces us to start giving up the things that once made us feel alive.
