Description

Sundays are for the loud, filthy work. The disposal place is shut, so I just keep breaking it up. Honestly, the smashing is the easy part. Once you get used to the engine breaker, anyone can bust ten centimetres of plain concrete. The hard bit comes after. You can't bin concrete rubble with normal rubbish, you've got to cart it off to a facility, and they're fussy about the vehicle too. No tipping bed and they'll pull a face, sometimes turn you away. That's why I get the heavy work done on a Sunday, when it's easier to be free, and have everything ready to just load up on a weekday off, because those days are precious. I keep thinking about the contractor I paid a million yen who bolted halfway through. Looking back, maybe the disposal costs ate into him and he was running at a loss. At the supermarket where I used to work, they taught me not to grind people down on price: if the other side makes nothing, good work doesn't last. So I didn't haggle. Still wasn't enough, apparently. If I'd just said "tell me if you're short and I'll top it up," maybe I wouldn't be out here doing the lot myself. The trash picking is my wife, I'm on the digger. That whole mountain of junk on the plot, she's actually picked up nearly all of it. She looked at it and said "that's tacky trash." I grew up around stuff like this, so it never struck me that way, which is why her words felt oddly fresh. --- 00:00 Breaking concrete from the edges 00:51 Getting the hang of the breaker 01:43 Smashing's easy, hauling is the nightmare 02:15 The contractor who took a million and ran 03:01 Wife picks the trash, I'm on the digger 05:51 Nearly at the far edge of the concrete 06:28 One last replay and that's it If you've ever carted your own rubble off on a day off, you get it. Pop back any time, there's always something to break round here. #DIY #concretedemolition #landclearing #digger #hardgraft
