Description
In late 1970 and early 1971, damaged spinal discs left Neil Young in excruciating pain, making it impossible for him to stand onstage with Crazy Horse and wield his heavy Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. Forced to wear a back brace and play sitting down, he turned to quieter acoustic material that became his 1972 masterpiece Harvest. When Young arrived in Nashville in February 1971 to appear on The Johnny Cash Show, producer Elliot Mazer invited him into Quadrafonic Sound Studios, where fellow TV guests James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt sat on a studio couch and recorded the song's classic backing harmonies.
Source: Documented in Jimmy McDonough's biography Shakey: Neil Young's Biography (pp. 352-370) and producer Elliot Mazer's 2001 recording retrospective in Mix magazine.
