Georgia 1972 Missing Girl Cold Case SOLVED — 51 Years to Find the Man Next Door

On a warm January evening in 1972, a 9-year-old girl in lavender Christmas shoes walked 85 feet across a street in Marietta, Georgia, to the laundromat she had visited a hundred times before. A box of laundry detergent spilled on the pavement was the only trace of what happened. Four thousand volunteers searched for 16 days. Her body was found in the woods a few miles from home. Detectives kept a hair and a piece of cloth from 1972, ran them through every available test for 51 years, and finally found the man they belonged to through genealogy. He had been in a cemetery in Cobb County the whole time, dead since 1974. Both her parents died before the answer came.
