Description
Following the 1985 American Music Awards where Purple Rain picked up three honours, forty-five major artists decamped directly to A&M Studios in Hollywood to record We Are the World. Prince had been assigned a vocal line alongside Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen, but refused to attend, telling Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin that none of the band were permitted to go either. Through his manager he offered to contribute an isolated guitar solo from outside the room, an arrangement producer Quincy Jones declined. While the rest of the industry spent the night under the famous sign to leave egos at the door, Prince took his entourage to Carlos and Charlie's on Sunset Strip.
Source: Documented by USA for Africa vocal arranger Tom Bahler and producer Quincy Jones, and confirmed in interviews with Revolution members Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman.
