Description
We set out this week with a simple goal: spend a solid eight hours reclaiming our overgrown hillside fields and tackling routine farm chores before the summer brush completely took over the property. But our land management plans ground to an immediate halt when a casual bit of metal detecting turned up clues from an entirely different era.
What started as a standard day on the tractor clearing the land turned into a massive metal detecting farm discovery right under our feet. Finding history on private land is always a thrill, but we never expected this. We began unearthing genuine 17th-century metal detecting finds, including hand-forged clinch nails, coarse earthenware pottery shards, an early iron curry comb, and a remarkably rare Snaphance mechanism that completely rewrites our understanding of this Virginia soil.
Could this 70-foot grid on our hillside be the footprint of a forgotten 1600s frontier outpost pushing inland from Jamestown? The Colonial Virginia history buried here is staggering, and we are mapping the entire perimeter live to find out exactly what happened here on The Farm?
This is just the beginning of unearthing the mysteries of our homestead.
