Description

Written by Hank Williams Jr. and released in May 1979 as the title track to his milestone Elektra/Curb album, Family Tradition directly addressed the relentless public scrutiny surrounding his lifestyle choices. Throughout the late 1970s, conservative executives at the Grand Ole Opry and industry columnists frequently questioned his hard-drinking habits, loud electric arrangements, and rock-star demeanor. Rather than offering apologies, Williams weaponized his lineage, sarcastically defending his rowdy behavior by referencing the tragic alcohol-fueled decline of his father, Hank Williams Sr., who died in the back of an automobile on New Year's Day 1953. The defiance resonated powerfully with working-class southern fans, making the single a permanent arena anthem.
