Description
School buses are specially designed vehicles used to transport children and students to and from schools, school-related activities, and, in some regions, designated community stops.
The earliest forms of school transport were horse-drawn wagons, sometimes called “school hacks” or “kid hacks,” used in rural parts of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As motor vehicles became more common, these wagons were gradually replaced by motorized buses. By the 1930s, school buses were becoming more standardized, particularly in North America, where safety rules, body design, and the now-familiar yellow color were increasingly adopted to make them more visible and recognizable.
Modern school buses are built with safety as their central purpose. Common features include high-backed seats, reinforced body construction, flashing warning lights, stop-sign arms, emergency exits, wide mirrors, and distinctive coloring to make the vehicle highly visible. In the United States and Canada particularly, the standard yellow color helps drivers identify a school bus quickly and respond appropriately when children are boarding or leaving.
School buses vary in size, from small van-based vehicles to full-size buses carrying dozens of passengers. They may be powered by diesel, gasoline, propane, compressed natural gas, or, increasingly, electricity.
The school bus system plays an important social role by expanding access to education, especially in rural or suburban areas where children may live far from school. Regulations governing school buses differ by country and region, but they generally cover driver qualifications, vehicle inspections, passenger behavior, loading procedures, and traffic rules around stopped buses.
