Description

The earliest written record of the Lord's Supper is not a quiet service. It is Paul rebuking a church where some went home hungry and others went home drunk. Here is what that meal really was, and what his warning about eating "unworthily" actually means. In this study we go back to the night Jesus was betrayed and read it as the first disciples would have: as a Passover meal. You will see why Peter and John followed a man carrying a water jar, why the disciples reclined instead of standing like Israel in Egypt, why Luke records two cups, and why Jesus chose the cup "after supper," the cup of blessing. We look at the bread of affliction (lechem oni), the word eucharisteo behind "Eucharist," the covenant blood of Exodus 24, and the Hallel psalms that were likely sung on the way to Gethsemane. We also take the strongest objection seriously: John's Gospel seems to place the crucifixion before the Passover meal, no lamb is mentioned at the table, and the four cups come from the Mishnah, written later. We weigh that evidence against Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 19:36. Then we turn to 1 Corinthians 11. "Remembrance" (anamnesis, Hebrew zikkaron) means stepping into what God did, not just thinking about it. And "not discerning the Lord's body" in its context points to the people at the table with you, which is why Paul ends with "tarry one for another." Sources include Mishnah Pesachim chapter ten, the Didache, Justin Martyr, and Joachim Jeremias. The Lord's Supper is the Passover, re-centered on Jesus, and it was meant to be a table where nobody is left out. 📖 KEY VERSE "This do in remembrance of me." — Luke 22:19 💬 Which detail from that table surprised you most? The reclining, the cup after supper, or the hymn Jesus sang on his way out the door?
