Description
The first time anyone speaks in tongues, the crowd understands every word — each in his own native language. So why are we taught that tongues are a private, unknown prayer language no one can understand?
This study walks through every place the Bible actually shows or explains speaking in tongues, in the original Greek, and lets Scripture define the gift instead of tradition. It starts at Pentecost in Acts chapter two, where Luke uses one word for the gift, glossa, and a different word, dialektos, for what the crowd heard — their own birth languages — and then names fifteen separate nations and regions who each heard in their mother tongue. It follows the word through the rest of Acts: the household of Cornelius and the disciples at Ephesus, where tongues again mark a real, public moment. Then it turns to First Corinthians, and the famous phrase "an unknown tongue" — showing why the word "unknown" is printed in italics in the King James Bible, meaning the translators added it and it is not in the Greek. We look at Paul's own rules in chapter fourteen: two or three at most, always with an interpreter, silence if no one can interpret, and his stunning line that he would rather speak five words people understand than ten thousand no one can follow, because God is not the author of confusion. Finally we deal honestly with the two hardest verses for this view — "tongues of men and of angels" and "he speaks mysteries unto God" — and hear the fourth-century preacher John Chrysostom on what these chapters meant to the early church. The pattern is consistent from Babel to Pentecost to Corinth: tongues are real languages, given as a sign, always aimed at being understood.
